Hi Terry, I just got a new refurbished laptop; it's a Dell with i7 4600U. I'd like to run Ubuntu on it, do you know which version I should look for? Maybe the latest is fine but my old Mac has got me used to needing older software.

    Thanks,
    Andy

You shouldn't have any trouble at all running the latest Ubuntu with any i7. They'll be releasing a new version on the 17th (19.10, Eoan Ermine) of this month.

If you want to try Ubuntu beta live, while waiting for the new release, you could do that.
Put the beta on a USB stick, and run it live, to test your hardware, especially your network and wifi.
You can get the beta here.

That way you will know if you want to try the new 19.10 release.

I will test and review the new 19.10 version here, when it comes out!

Thanks guys, I think I will try the new release when it comes out in a few days. I might need a bit of help figuring it out.

Making a conversion using Andys Ham Radio Linux ubuntu variant. Chock full of radio applications. So far not too bad.

                  It's easy.
get the apps open you want to Screenshot, then hit the print screen button.
The print screen button on a laptop is near the delete key at the top.

Well that didn't work as I'm on a laptop and prtscr is one of the ones you have to use fN key. So I found flameshot which is similar to skitch which is good when you want to annotate a screenshot. What do you want to see besides desktop?

Really digging the responsiveness upgraded from a dual core laptop to an i3 with a SSD drive. Got chrome, rssfeeds , all the hamradio programs and electronics programs I could ever want. Just time to setup my offline mail reader and work out APRS.

                        Looks cool!
Yes the SSDs really speed things up a lot.
The mouse on your screen indicates you are using the XFCE desktop.
So Andy is starting with Xubuntu, and modifying from there.
If you want to know what kernel you are on?

Instead of XFCE, I put Gnome on everything, if possible.

Are there reasons Gnome doesn't work on everything?
I think I tried gnome when Redhat was version 5, in college we had to load slackware linux on computers because then it was as close to unix as you could get using 3.5 floppy disks at 14.4k.
