Fixed it. I changed the 2n7000 again. Apparently the first replacement was old and faulty. I pulled it out of a plastic parts bin. The new one came in today and I tried it and viola!

Glad you got it. I hate it when that happens (install a bad part). You end up looking elsewhere and wasting a bunch of time- only to find out you had it figured out at the outset.
