  • Mesa Boogie .50cal el84 version bias question

I have a Mesa Boogie .50 cal (4X EL84 version) on my workbench for a checkout. Bias (measured via the measure the resistance of the output transformer windings, then measure the voltage drop across them with the amp on method) is 49mA for one bank of tubes and 51mA for the other. At the B+ of 445V, this puts the dissipation for a bank of tubes at 22.7 watts, dividing by two tubes, 11.34w. After the amp has been on for about 20min, the bias creeps up a little to 53mA on one bank.

This is damn near 100% dissipation at idle for EL84s, which are a 12w tube, right? Can anyone with experience with this amp tell me if this is just how they are designed or if this is a cause for concern. I could theoretically mod the bias circuit to make it run cooler, but then the B+ would no doubt creep up to even more insanely high levels, so it's kind of a catch 22 situation.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Mesa likes to run those EL84's pretty hard.

I wouldn't give it any worry.
