  • Captain Crunch Stereo Tube Preamp

Hey man, can you fix my Captain Crunch Preamp? Somethin's rattling around inside it.

One of the studio's clients stopped by with this, along with an old Wurlitzer Tube Power Amp which worked together with a field coil speaker that he had out in the trunk of his car. A couple items he picked up over the past weekend at a swap meet. I didn't see an output xfmr on the chassis of the Wurlitzer amp, though the field coil would no doubt be the choke for the system.

Transformer is missing a screw; case closed.

On a more serious note, start by tracing out a schematic.

It certainly requires an appropriate work bench

I took one look inside, said no, but took photos just for sharing one of the silly requests that came my way last week. There's still a military ammo case amp/reverb thing that was dropped off here with no instructions, that was just as crazy. Another NO on that, and waiting to see if some day the owner of that ever comes by to inquire about it. No idea who the owner is.

OK, I'll ask. WHAT IS THIS THING?

My guess is that's some kind of a metal shredder.

Yup. The original 'heavy metal shredder'.

I must admit, there's something very satisfying seeing a car, complete, get tossed into that shredder and have it eaten, engine block and all. A fitting end to a money-pit car that constantly depleted your bank account in repairs. All that's missing is the explosion when the gas tank, partially full, ignites. That is awesome to watch!
