  • Variable HV Bench Power Supplies

    I've been thinking about building/getting a HV bench power supply for prototyping, testing, experimenting, etc. I know Heathkit offered a few options.
    Ideally, It should be variable within a range of, let's say, +200V-600V. Or even better yet, provide the option for a bipolar supply in the range of +/-100V to +/-300V.

    One thing I've been thinking about is using nickb's PIC/three quadrant triac, he discusses here:
    MOSFET Dissipation (for Power Scaling / VVR) #53
    Assuming that the PT has a robust VA rating, is there any reason not to use something like this for a variable bench supply?
    Also, is it worth regulating the supply for something like this?
    If I have a 50% chance of guessing the right answer, I guess wrong 80% of the time.
