    The hassle with diy'ing an AC mains powered switchmode (even using Vicor style parts), is that it is up to you to ensure the power supply is compliant to local safety regulations. That is especially important if you are going to let anyone else use or connect to the equipment you may have put together - now or at any time in the future.

    That's not to say that dc/dc step up supplies for valve amps are inherently safe (because they use a compliant power supply to connect to the mains AC and provide a low safe DC voltage) - as any high dc voltage (even bias supplies) could cause a death - but it does significantly reduce the risk for diy imho.

      I've used one of these without any issue and a guy over on sloclone made an x88r clone with one.
