Tip plugs and jacks

I just received some tip plugs and jacks from Mouser, to be used to measure
the voltage across the 1ohm cathode resistors while adjusting bias.
I'm surprised by the fact that a plug will not enter into a jack firmly so as
not to have to hold the plug in contact with the jack during a measurement ?

I found that if the tip were just a bit longer it will indeed seat firmly in the
jack. If I don't screw the tip all the way into its plastic handle so that it
sticks out more than it should then I can stick it in the plug and it'll hold
by itself.

Is this normal ? Seems kind of a pain.

The part sounds like a dud, if you want to salvage it you might try sticking a collar or washer behind whatever it is to make the plug tip protrude more?, whilst being tightly screwed together.
