  • Sherwood pickup info needed....

I won this on Ebay, always wanted to look inside one of these:

If that link doesn't work its item 190218641274

I found two end of this supposedly dead coil that work and got about 9.5K reading. Anyone know what these typically read? the wire is a mess, its an air coil paper bobbins, the wood actually holds it together more than anything else. Just wondering how much of the coil I'm tapping into and whether I should completely rewind. It seems to be 43 gauge wire also...

That's the same as a Kay "Thin Twin" or "Jimmy Reed" pickup. I'd guess you're tapping into almost all the coil as most of the Kay pickups to come later weren't wound nearly that hot.

I was cruising the net recently for info on the Kay Thin Twin and found a post on a forum by someone who was restoring one. He measured the pickups and they read out at 9.6K at the neck and 10K at the bridge.

That looks similar to the pickup on the Kay "Howlin' Wolf" bass.

          cool.....

well I guess I lucked out and got most of the coil intact then. Darn I was kinda hoping it would be dead so I could see how that chrome thing works over the magnet, can't really see down there now. magnet wire is formvar looking stuff.....
