  • Sovtek mig 50 issues ?

Just bought my first tube amp head some weeks ago.(noob)
it's a sovtek mig 50 (orange edition) - no master volume.
connected to a engl 412cab at 8 ohms.
it was supposed to be unused, stored in russia for 20 years or so.
the head looked fine, but had some issues :

*The mains trafo is buzzing - quite alot

*The mains trafo buzzes a little bit more, when turning standby on

*Presence control is not responding - if i use a dirtortion pedal it is responding somewhat, but in reverse. (turning knob leftwise - gives more treble).

Does anybody know if this is normal ?
    i'm thankful for any responses.

    Hey poffa,

I also got the mig 50 orange edition. I have this hissing problem too. I didin't know if it came from the tubes or something else. I first changed the tubes and the sockets and rewired all of that. Sounded a bit better....but still this his when i turn it on. Even more when I turn the stand by on.
I think it could be the same problem...
Are you sure it comes from the transfo??
We could help each other because I think we have the same mig 50 problem!!
    Keep in touch

      Hello Pyo

Yes, the buzzing(in my amp) comes from the mains trafo - I'm quite sure of that, as it is a mechanichal buzz. The Buzz was a bit reduced When I padded it.
I also have hiss - but the hiss comes from the speakers, and only When standby is on. When standby is off - there's no sound from speakers.
I have been told that these amps are supposed to make som noise..

Is your hiss coming from the speakers, when Standby is off ???
Maybe you have a problem with output trafo then

      Keepin' in touch
