  • Rivera EL34 to 6L6 switch?

    Hi all,
a question from a new member.
    I have a '94 Rivera Knucklehead k.55 with two EL 34s.
I would like to try 6l6 Tubes in this amp for more Headroom.
Is it possible and what must be taken care of? I am sure there are different plate currents. Impedance? Is the output Transformer basically able to handle it (it seems way overseized in this amp and handles the 100Watt version as well)

    Thanks

Have you considered the E34L sold by Eurotubes.com? It is claimed to have 30% more clean head room.

      PP,

The 6L6GC is going to need a much higher bias - and higher drive voltate - than the EL34. Does this amp have a variable bias? If not, are you experiences enough to install one?

And to add to Rob's comment... with everything else being equal, EL34s usually run around 10 to 12v less negative voltage... so if your amp doesn't have an adjustable bias supply with sufficient voltage swing to bring it another say, 15vdc more negative, you'll have to mod it.
