Power Transformer sizing

Hey guys,

Is there a way to measure the "size, voltage, output" of a power transformer to determine what tubes it would be capable of running?

The one I'm wanting to know about is currently driving two 6K6s. I want to know if it can drive two 6V6s..

Anyone know this?

6V6 has a higher power rating than a 6K6 ... 8.5 vs 14 watts, so there may be a problem with swapping the tubes.

The reliable way is to find the numbers on the transformer and look them up, which may or may not be possible. In general, power transformers go up in price with power needs, which means that using an over-rated power supply increases costs needlessly. Designers usually choose just the right size to meet the circuit's needs.

You could most likely use 6V6's without much risk.

On the other hand, 6K6's are at least half the price of 6V6's. It may be worthwhile to try a few and see what the amp sounds like. You might be surprised. (I have an old amp that uses a 6F6, which sounds great).
