Hey guys,
I'm thinking of rebuilding a SF Champ from the ground up. I bought the thing for $5 and the transformers are no good, so nothing is lost by departing from stock, drilling holes, etc. I'd be fixing it up for a friend who already has a Budda and a Holland for on-stage stuff. He just wants a small amp that he can use in his apartment without the cops showing up. This would be used with a range of guitars: Nocaster, SG Junior, ES-335, ES-125, Strat. I just want something for him that can break up at moderate volume without the grit coming at the expense of useable semi-clean tones.
Here's what I have in mind:
Heyboer BF Champ PT, Hammond 125ESE OT, 9H, 200ma choke (maybe)
6SL7 in v1, parallelled. Send to volume.
12AX7 in v2 as a cathode follower feeding a 5F6-A style tone stack with a fixed midrange (equivalent to 4 if there were a midrange knob).
6V6 cathode biased, basically the same as the original Champ, but with a 10W cathode resistor to allow him to sub in a 6L6G.
How does this sound to you?
