  • Running a tube amp without PA Tubes ???

I was wondering... Will I hurt the output transformer if I pull the the PA tubes out of an amp and connect the effects out directly to a mixer via a direct box. I've done this before but I didn't know if it's safe practice. I have a crate power block specifically made for this application but at times I'd like to use a tube pre amp from one of my heads.

I doubt it would hurt it at all. You just might find you have slightly higher voltages on the pre-amp plates (as the B+ has no output tubes to load it down)

With the tubes out, there is nothing to make a large signal peak. Yes, you can operate this way.
