  • Rocktron rack Preamps and peoples thoughts

Well, I had to ask about this as I know since most here are tone fanatics that some have tried many preamps by different companies. Rocktron being one.

I just purchased a used Rocktron Chameleon 2000 that is supposed to be internet ready. I haven't gotten it yet as its on its way to me. I did a bunch of research after the purchase and found some not so good reviews so I thought I would ask if any one here has tried the Rocktron preamps and what they thought of them?

I used an A/DA MP-1 years back and it was pretty cool rack preamp but had a few shortcomings about the way it worked, like a dropout in sound when switching patches and the chorus wasn't that good.

After reading some posts the Chameleon 2000 wasn't rated so good and some said it was junk. I have a buddy that has the original blackfaced Chameleon and it rocks. I thought it sounded good for what it was.

Please, chime in if you have any experience with these and let me know what you felt about the sound of these preamps.

    Thanks

    Dave

I think most people here just don't like rackmount preamps in general. I used to have a SR&D Rockman. It had about 100 buttons, and yet no matter what combination of buttons you pushed, it still sounded like poop. That just about sums up my experience of the rack era.

I own the Rocktron Voodoo Valve(Basically a chameleon with a pre amp tube for warming) a Peavey Rockmaster and a JMP-1. The Voodoo valve is my least favorite. Why? -sounds the most processed and takes too much scrolling to get to the EQ section!(tone controls) At least the JMP-1 is a push of a tone button away from adjusting the TBM. The Rockmaster is the most straight foward with no midi and a pile of FX loops. Its a toss up between the JMP-1 and Rockmaster for tone depending on the day and type of music. Bob
