  • .047pF caps?

    G'day as i'm new to all this; can anyone tell me where to get .047pF caps as i,m in Australia and have searched the net and it appears that noone here has them . the project i'm doing is a 4 band guitar preamp all i have is a schematic pic to work from it shows the cap going between the circuit and the tone pot , could it be a misprint if not what alternative caps would work many thanks Greg

    Welcome to the place.

    I think that you are really in need of 0.047uF and not pf caps.

    I don't think that I've even heard of a cap value that small.

      What Bill said.

      .047pf would be a couple of 2cm wires spaced a few cm apart. Really that is a very small capacitance, the wires leading to it would have more capacitance than the part.

      In fact in old radio circuits, they sometimes needed something like 1pf to tweak a circuit, and they would stick a couple inches of wire next to each other to make it. That was called a "gimmick" capacitor.

      pf = picofarad
      uf = microfarad

      .047uf is an extremely common part in guitar amps.

        .047pF cap

        thanks to everyone that answered as you can see i'm a novice at this , i thought .047uF seemed more logical , but some places do advertize .047pF caps (e.g unicorn electronics in the U.S) it's pretty confusing i'll try different values see what happens

          Perhaps it is because you are in Australia. American caps must be operated upside down in Australia for proper effect. That would invert their capacitance value. At least I think that is how it works.

            Why explains why a US site is marketing .047pF caps for Australians... (seeing is believing.)

              It would help if they took a picture of the actual part they're selling...geez

              That's a 2.2uf cap in that link...... oh, but "picture is for informational purposes only"......They should get a clue!

                Look at their whole page of monolithic ceramic caps. The seven values offered are:
                .001pf
                .01pf
                .047pf
                .1uf
                .22uf
                .47uf
                1uf

                Seems darned odd to me to have a line of seven values of a sort of part, three in thousandths of a pf, and the other four in fractional uf. And leaving out the far more useful other uf numbers. I am betting my lunch money that is a typo, and they are all supposed to be in uf.

                How on earth would you use a big old part like that at .001pf?
