  • Problems with Fender Hot Rod Combo

Problem is. Upon swithing on the amp it begins to crackle quite loudly even if all controls are set to zero. I have replaced all of the valves and this has had no effect. If you plug in a guitar it will play as usual except for the crackle. Any advice.

Does it crackle more if you hit the top of the amp with your fist? Does the crackle become more intense the louder you play? I've run across several of these where the solder on the tube sockets have failed & caused a variety of noise & wierd sounds in the amp. Usually a visual inspection in the back of the amp on the tube pc board (solder side) will reveal failing solder or not. You'll usually find cracked solder on the tube socket pins.

I agree, look VERY closely at the solder on the pins of the power tube sockets. See any litle cracks in the solder? Whenever I go inside one of that series amplifier, I always resolder the power tube socket pins.

And bottom cwenter of hte main board are two 5w resistors, usually 470 ohm or 330 ohm. Poke at them. Does that make crackle?
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Agree. On this general subject Enzo I have recently gone through a RI Bassman and it had a loose screen resistor. On pulling the board I found that there was sufficient solder around the lead but that it had never tinned, which leads me to think that this problem could be one of surface preparation, or the lack thereof.
