  • Is a 5931 a good sub for a 5U4GB rectifier?

Just picked up an amp that uses a 5U4GB, but has a Weber Copper Cap in place currently. Looking to put a tube recto in there.

I read the 5931 is a little more rugged than the 5U4GB. Is it an acceptable sub in a guitar amp, 5E5A tweed Pro circuit?

NOS 5U4's are pretty easy and cheap enough to come by.If it a case of you having a 5931 on hand,I dont see why it wouldnt work as a sub.

A 5R4 will do you as well and draw less current in the bargain.

Nope, I don't have anything in hand right now. I just saw a 5931 for a good price and wondered about it. I see the NOS/UOS 5U4GBs are pretty easy to find and certainly don't break the bank.

Any particular brand favored over another?

Interesting about the 5R4. They do about the same voltage-wise, but draw less current? That seems like a no-brainer

Stick with new, RCA or Sylvania is good goods. If you want to try a 5R4 don't get a Cetron potato masher unless you have the room for it.
