  • 4x12 cab

I bought a sears and roebuck 4x12 cab. It works correctly but sounds pretty crappy.I'm trying to date it. Model # is 257-14253201. Speaker code is138-12 7892464. # on cone is w1200es. Thats all i have, trying to put a date on it and also what kind of speakers. speakers do not show power or ohmage? Checked with my meter and cab reads 7 and change ohms , so i guess it's wired 8 ohms. Any imformation would be swell. Thanks, TVJR

I'd say the EIA spkr ID code is 789 for McGregor mfgr. Looks like the 46th week of 1964 for an approx. mfgr date.

Those could be possibly some kind of oddball speakers someone just threw in there. I've never heard of McGregor speakers, and the only thing I could find through a quick search is that McGregor are a U.K. company started in 1974 building mainly PA and DJ stuff. ('74? instead of '64?)

I wonder if it sounds bad because they are possibly not guitar speakers, but PA/stereo type speakers? Didn't a lot of Silvertones come with Jensens?

Hope you didn't pay too much for that cab.

Your probably right, 74 sounds more correct. The cab has a back bottom angle cut with casters and about a fifteen foot cable wire. I'm wondering if this was a p.a. cab. Also the speakers have silver dust covers. Thanks for your help. TVJR.
