At the outlet

I picked up a book by a respected expert that left me wondering.. He states that the wide hole in an electrical outlet is the "hot" side although every outlet I've replaced says connect white wire to the terminal connected to the wide blade. This was in his discussion of grounding. ?

The wide slot is the neutral (white) lead for a USA line socket.
There is either a typo in that text or it's a questionable source of information.
