  • stromberg carlson signet 33 amp

I just got this today at a thrift store for $10.99. The stromberg carlson signet 33 came in what looks like a suitcase, you flip open two latches open it up and theres two 12 inch speakers one on each half of the case, inside the case is the amp head, the amp and speaker case are green. it came with a grey cable thats bout 15 feet long that has screw on type ends instead of modern type 1/4 inch plugs. the electric cable is two prong type, I've read were this should be canged to three prong for safety reasons. what year was this amp made? anyone got information on it? sorry about not loading pictures, but will in a couple days. this amp sounds amazing . thanks.

    10.99!!
    What a steal.
I would hope that you feel guilty
    Here is the schematic.
I think they where manufactured in the late 50's, early 60's.
A 3 prong cord would be a really good idea.

        That really neat.

How does it sound and how do you like it.

I've always wanted one of these heads. Or even just the S/C PA mic mixers, really.

        Thanks

The amp sound very clean and even with the volume all the way up you can barely hear any noise coming out of it. it has the 6L6 and 12Ax7 tubes made by stromberg carlson. I'm having a amp tech install a grounded 3 prong plug and modern 1/4 input jacks for channels 1 and 2. I really like this old amp, I have a first generation fender cyber twin that is now collecting dust since I started using the sc amp.

I use an old S/C 6v6/7408 stereo amp for music.
I like it so much I'd like to have an S/C guitar amp too.
            What a find.

            Thanks

FWIW - If after you play it a while and hum starts to creep in over time- don't be scared, the can capacitors are going.
It happened to both of my S/C amps. And about after the same amount of time on both of them- which was about 2 to 3 hours.

              Nice find

If you decide you don't like it, I'll give you $20.00 plus shipping.

Seriously, that should be a really sweet amp. I'm surprised that you say it's clean all the way up...should be a nice amount of break-up and overdrive at higher levels with those 2 12ax7. Of course, p-p 6L6 will be a tremendous amount of sound before you get to the overdrive. I have a single-ended 6L6 with 2 12ax7 in a similar configuration and it really starts to grind with volume about 1/2. Check out ebay....you might be surprised how much those Signets are going for (just the head, without speakers).

I've once seen two S/C amps, exactly the same, except one had an added grid stop resistor with bypass cap. Strange I thought because it was obviously factory wired- all original. Anyway, the one with the grid stopper distorted way earlier than the once without. (I restored both by the way so I knew that was the only reason for the earlier break up).

Anyway its good to know because two different people could have the same amp with one small exception, if you know what I mean.

But I general, I am also surprised that Signet 33 is clean all the way up.
