Info on Polytone II/IV/V M-PA

Hi, new here and hope I am posting in the proper place.......

I acquired a Polytone II/IV/V M-PA and am trying to find information for it,

1) Does Polytone have a naming convention? What does II/IV/V M-PA mean?
2) I got the amp with an EV FORCE 15" speaker in it, I am assuming this is not original, any idea what might have been in there originally? (and how do these EV speakers compare?)
3) Is there a way to figure out the date it was made? Specs?

In order to save money, Polytone used one label for a number of different models. That is why your amp's label is marked III/IV/V M-PA.

The amp originally came with an unmarked speaker made by Eminence, which was rated at 4 ohms. The EV is a replacement and is probably an 8 ohm speaker, which will not allow the power amp to reach its full output.

You can rough estimate the date of manufacture by looking at the pot codes. As for specs, they changed through the years, and if you give us a better description of your amp, like number of channels, preamp and power amp features, etc. we might be able to get a little more info to you.

Thanks Bill, the details I have:

One channel, two inputs (hi and low), a three position Bright - Dark switch, bass and treble controls, and a volume knob with a concentric knob inside (red) for distortion. Also has pretty nice reverb.

It looks like you have a Mini Brute IV and my guess would be late '70's. What is the covering like, black felt? What is the front grill like, foam circle with grey felt or full front foam panel?

It is indeed a black felt/velvet kind of material. Unfortunately, the front is a mystery. When I bought it, it had two pieces of plywood screwed to the front with a metal mesh screen sandwiched between them. It worked well, but was quite ugly so I just replaced one of the pieces of plywood and the screen with an actual speaker grill and some fabric. Still needs molding around the edges, but should look a little more professional on stage.
