  • Crate DX 212 combo rigging

    Hey,

I'm trying to hook up an extra Crate cabinet into my Crate DX 212. From looking at the back panel, it seems as though the stereo line out would be a valid connection for an extra speaker, but when I plug in the speaker through the line out on the DX 212, I get a loud buzz. Does anyone know if it's actually possible to hook-up an extra cabinet to the DX 212 and, if so, how do I go about doing it?

If they donīt supply extension cabinet jacks, I guess the answer is no.

First of all, please be aware that the "stereo line out" is a preamp signal (ie: 200mv's). It cannot possibly drive an 8 ohm load (ie: speaker).
Plus it is a "stereo" jack. So if you plugged in a regular 1/4" mono plug, you shorted out one of the signals. (not good)
Secondly, the DX212 is a stereo amplifier.
It utilizes (2) LM3886 output ic's to drive the speakers (one per speaker).
As Crate has chosen a B+, B- of 35 Vdc, into an 8 ohm load (speaker) this ic is putting out 50 watts. (each one).
That is the design limit (typically) of the LM3886.
If you where to "add" another 8 ohm speaker in parallel, you would have a 4 ohm load.
That would cause the LM3886 to provide 100 watts (if the power supply can keep up).
That will "let the smoke out" of the chip.
Now it is possible that you could rewire the speakers in series.
But you will not get any more "power" out of the amp.
Just more coverage because of an added cabinet.
