How much ripple is too much?

    Did you short the reverb FS jack to ground? That could be your hum source.
    Did you turn all the volume controls to "zero?"
    You may still have a blown small signal transistor in the preamp stages.
    If there is "not" 0.0 volts DC on the output...
    I would keep working, until there "is."
    Some techs find small DC on output "acceptable."
    I do not. If it's not 0 then there is still something wrong.
    OR in 'my' book there is...

      As g-one says, 5% is the usually quoted "rule of thumb" ripple value on B+ for both tube and SS push pull amps for musical instrument use.
      I usually design for 2% max but then I like the power amp a little tighter than some other folk.

        If you want to know when filter capacitors should be replaced, than it simple as when a power supply capacitors fail, it can indeed take out a transformer. It doesn't happen often, but it happens. I have seen some capacitors that have exploded, and they have been made quite the mess.

          On an amp this old, the filters are one of the first things you think about replacing.
          You can't expect 30-40 year old caps to work right...although there are exceptions.
