Dunno, there are so many possible combinations. You just have to be careful that the preamp is putting out a suitable signal level for the power amp. There is no standard level.
A popular idea nowadays is to put lower-powered output stages onto classic rock amps like the Plexi or SLO100, so you can crank it up full and overdrive it with less hearing damage.
If you're really adventurous, or don't want to spend money on output transformers, you can make a hybrid. For my first homebuilt amp I bolted a tube preamp onto an old hi-fi graphic EQ, and a Philips solid-state PA amp obtained at a flea market. I ran it through a 4x12 with 4 different random speakers. It actually didn't sound as bad as you'd expect."Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

Yea I did something like that, except the other way around. I took an 18w marshall single channel, and made the power section with two el34's and a SS rectifier, instead of two el84's and an EZ81 rectifier tube. I got about 30 watts from that, probably will convert pretty much the whole thing to a trainwreck express in a little while. It sounds nice, just bigger than the 18w.
