  • Kitty Hawk Junior schematic needed.

I’m trying to track down a schematic for a Kitty Hawk Junior 1x12" valve combo. It’s dated 1990 on the front panel, has ‘Designed and hand-made in West Germany’ on the back, and it’s a 4 x 12AX7 + 2 x EL34 setup. I took a chance on this as it was very cheap (the owner was selling everything guitar-related and giving up playing), but the power section ‘comes and goes’ – when it bursts into life, it sounds fantastic and am happy to pay to get my amp tech to sort it. I was hoping to give him a start by sending him a circuit diagram. If it’s any help, the EL34s light up and get as hot as expected, and the pre-amp controls work as they should. It’s just that 90% of the time, the output stage appears to do nothing or very little (i.e.;, the only signal that seems to be getting through to the speaker is the 1 watt or so from the army of 12AX7s), but when that power stage kicks in, it’s the best sound I’ve ever had, even at domestic-friendly levels.

Is there an FX loop? If so, plug a spare cord from FX send to FX return, any help?

Likewise, if there is a preamp out next to a powr amp in jack, plug a cord from pre out to power in. Help?

Also, when you have this low output condition, try plugging the guitar into the FX return. Comes out still weak, or now strong? If there is a power amp IN jack, plug guitar into that, same question.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Yes, I just tried the FX loop as per your first suggestion, and after a pretty satisfying hour I've just had to give up to allow my neighbours to sleep! It's sounding as it should, so that should give my tech a good clue. All is not 100% well (tone knobs behaving oddly; bass off means volume off!, but maybe it's a quirk of the design?), and there's some howling when the reverb's on full, but I'm guessing a microphonic tube somewhere. Hope it's not a preamp one - they're all Siemens and Mullard! Many thanks for helping me to blaze a trail for my amp Doc!!!!!

          Kitty Hawk Junior schematic

...I had a look at the file and to my untrained eye it looks like the one I've already seen, but this one seems to have slightly better resolution. It states 'matched pair of 6L6' whereas mine is EL34s. I started wondering if it had been tweaked to take these, but I found a listing on ebay.com for the head, and a few shots clearly show EL34s. I'll forward the diagram to my tech anyway, I'm sure it'll be of help to him. Kind regards and thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
