  • Fender deluxe 3 early breakup

    Hi All.
So I re-valved this amp for a buddy of mine. Had some dry joints here and there on the board, nothing major. Re-biased for 65% Max plate dissipation of 6L6GC's etc.
He picked it up and took it on a gig. He phoned me up after soundcheck stating that the amp breaks up too early now, around 3.
Any ideas what I might have done wrong/ differently?

Perhaps you biased it a lot hotter than he had it before.

      Not enough info chief!
Is this a tweed Deluxe 5E3 or Hot Rod Deluxe series III?

In other words, did you simply use two 6L6s in an amp made for two 6V6s and merely rebias the 6L6s at nearly 19 watts each!?

If yes... could be a bad move.
That would have the wrong OT impedance and a stock tweed 6V6 amp has closer to 100ma PT vs a 160ma-200ma PT of a big 6L6s amp.... etc etc etc.
      More info please.

Depending on how 'hot' the customers pickups are & how hard he plays, 3 sounds about right.
The old tubes may have been, well, old.
