  • Peavey 5150 212 combo issue

    Hello all!! First post here!!

I'm having an issue with my peavey 5150 212 combo. Here's what it's doing...

Amp issue part 2 - YouTube

I've heard lots of things about what it could be...mainly filter caps. When I first turn the amp off of standby, it sounds like a thunderstorm is coming through the speakers. After a few seconds, it dissipates and continues to have low rumbling sounds while I'm playing. It also sounds very metallic, as if all the tube character and warmth has been sucked out. It does this I'm both channels, whether or not a guitar is plugged in.

Most people are saying I should just send I to peavey and had them fix it. I was initially thinking that if I could figure out what it was I could do it myself, I've worked in tube amps before, but this thing kinda looks like a nightmare to work on, so I don't think I want to lol.

My old 6505 212 did the same thing and tube swapping fixed it, but I already tried that here with no luck.

    Thanks for any help!!

Do any of the control settings affect the noise?
If you plug the guitar into the fx return, what happens to the noise?
    How old is the amp?

The controls don't affect the noise. I don't know how old the amp is...don't know how to tell...

These amps are a nightmare to work on, yes.

Ended up pulling the reverb tank, because I was going to anyway, and the amp has returned to 100% functionality!!!

Judging by how you described the sounds, it seems like the reverb was stuck on "10", and maybe with a broken spring in the tank.

That's a fairly accurate sounding description...
