  • Peavey special 130 pop on clean channel

I'm the proud owner of a Peavey special 130 (best ss amp I've had)--but it has a POP that occurs on the clean channel
when the amp is at a fairly loud level when I hit 2 notes (not low notes) simultaneously --or sometimes 1 note).Any ideas as to some things to check ?There is NO hum of any type and the overdrive side of the amp seems ok.I have the reverb all the way off also.I appreciate your help!!!

OK, just to eliminate speaker vibration, don't plug anything into the amp, just turn it on with the controls set as usual. Ball up your fist and whack the top of the amp sharply. Does that make it pop? If so, we have a loose connection somewhere inside. If it does not react, then the amp is solid, and we move on.

PLug a spare cord from FX send to FX return. Oops, I'm sorry, they are called preamp out and power amp in on your amp. Either way, connect them together with a spare cord. Now play, any different?

Those are general, and I know you said only clean channel, but I like to check anyway. The loose thing could be in the clean channel, you see.

Within the clean channel, if nothing is loose, then I start to look for unwanted DC voltage offsets.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Thanks so much -Enzo -you helped me out a few years back on a old USA made Blues Deluxe amp (which I still have).I put the patch cord from the pre-amp out and in and turned it up (OUCH) and played --DID NOT get the crackle/pop (no snap).Funny -I WAS running my TC electronics Nova system through the preamp out /in BEFORE you told me to put the patch cord in.So are we saying the signal through the loop is possibly too strong (through the TC )???

It’s the big brother to my ’82 Peavey Bandit. The Special is pretty much the same amp, but pumps out 130 watts of pure power. This amp is INSANELY loud. Like… ‘turn the volume past 3 and your vision starts to blur’ loud.
