Recording guitar amp using my Nikon D7000

I have a few video cameras including a Nikon D7000 digital camera. Only the Nikon have mic level adjustment and still distorted even recording 10' away from the guitar amp. I don't know how to record the guitar amp that sound good enough and not distorted.

I am thinking about buying a instrument mic, put a volume pot before connecting to the camera. So far I have seen these:

I don't even know whether this is the right thing to do. I have seen people making video with mic close to the amp and get very good recording. I need suggestion how to do it in a cheaper way, not to buy thousands of dollars in equipments.

Probably the cheapest and easiest way to do this would be to get an attenuator to put inline. I'm attaching a picture for illustration purposes, but not necessarily endorsing this particular one. There are multitudes of them out there. There are also instructions here and there on the web showing how to build your own. You could also get a small mixer to give you even more control, but more $ involved to do that.

I have been thinking, can I get the GLS ES-57 mic, then I build a small box with a 500ohm volume pot. The mic is about 300ohm impedance, so I just use the mic to drive the volume pot, then use the wiper of the volume pot to drive into the camera. This I can adjust the attenuation.
