  • Speaker suggestion for a Marshall build.

Hi, once again, I am building another amp. This time is going to be a Marshall type. It's going to be using the chassis and cabinet of a Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb tiny combo with 1X12. I know I need a 4X12 close cabinet to get the true Marshall sound, but that's out of the question. I don't have room for a big cabinet AND more important, I have the Dual Reverb sitting here doing nothing. I don't want to go through the trouble of selling it. For a few hundred dollars, I am not going to halt it around to different stores and particular I don't want strangers to come to my house to test the amp.

That said, I am looking for a speaker that will work best for this small combo and still get the Marshall sound. I am planning to use the original PT and I already received the Classic Tone Plexi 50W 3.6K primary OT. I am planning to use EL34 to get as close to the Marshall as I can.

Because it is going to be close to 50W, that rules out the lower power speakers. I currently have a Celection G12T-75 that is more British sounding. The Emence Legend 1258 is too American. So I am looking for suggestion here.

So far, I listened to the youtube comparison of WGS ET65 vs ET90. I read good recommendation on the ET65, but it's only 65W rated. ET90 is supposed to be a higher power version of ET65.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwwgQw_qXEM

I am open for suggestion of a speaker that can handle 50W amp.

    Thanks

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is there concern about using a 65W speaker on a 50W amp?

If it were me, I'd use the 75W Celestion I already have and voice the amp for it since you're building anyway. Also, since you're wanting a 4x12 sound out of a single 12, you might consider a closed back (maybe even ported) cabinet for extended low end.

I love the Celestion Vintage 30, or something similar.

I cannot close the back as it's a combo. You think 65W is safe for a 50W amp?

Yes, I think a 65W speaker would be fine. Many amps actually use a slightly under rated speaker for earlier breakup. Sorry, I didn't notice that you were using an existing combo.

On the vintage 30: I do love the speaker, but if you plan on "diming" the amp or playing it at loud volumes for extended periods of time, it might not last long as a single.

The Vintage 30 is a 60 watt speaker.
I have one that came stock in my Traynor YCS50, with 2 6L6s.
I've played it everyday for 6 years, still sounds and works great.

My bad! You are 100% correct T. For some stupid reason, I saw the 30 and was thinkin' 30W.

I did quite a bit of listening, the Vintage 30 does give the vibe of my old Marshall Plexi. It just has the heavy grinding sound of the Marshall. But it is so expensive!!!!

Can you name some speakers that are similar to Vintage 30?

There's some V30 wannabes, similar but not quite the real deal.
One which comes to mind is WGS Veteran 30 , there's also an Eminence version of which I don't bremember the name , somebody will.

Yes, I spent last night listening the comparison between Veteran 30 and Vintage 30. It is similar, but not that close. Veteran 30 seems to have wider frequency response while V30 is all mids. V30 still gives the truer Marshall sound.......Not necessary better, but just reminds me of my Plexi from long time ago.

Check out the new Eminence CV-75.
I listened to a ton of sound clips, and the CV-75 is under a C-note, and sounds great to me.

Thanks, I think I like the V30 and Veteran 30 better. Maybe it's the different recording and amp. I have to go on youtube to find A/B with either V30 or Veteran 30. I really like the V30, only think I don't like is the price!!
