  • Mullard 3-3

I ran across this odd ball kit. Not your typical guitar amp.

Tode Guitar Amplifier Kit | Bottlehead

Click the 'MORE' tab at the bottom of the page for a little more detail. The insides look like a rat's nest. Yuk!

This is the old Mullard design it's based on.

    Mullard 3-3. Three Watt Amplifier

Direct coupled EF86 to EL84. Voltages near the bottom of the page. Anyone wanna try to build one?
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

$600? For a Champy-Amp? Not bad... there's a guy in NoVA charging $2000 for them...

$2000 he wants. Has he sold any? At that price, or a secret cash discount?

Lots of tyros want to be the next Dumble. Sure, step right up, let's see a list of satisfied customers and what they actually paid.

Oh, well the Washington DC area has much higher cost of living than other places, so $2000 seems pretty reasonable...

Well, my answer was "a Champ? Look, I know the cabinet is cool, but, seriously? I know that old suitcase didn't cost $1200..." For that kind of $$$, I'll get an ACTUAL Champ!

              Leo,

I think he's sold at least three... Well, the store has, anyway. I won't buy one!

Wonder what the store's share of the loot is?

Fender has their "authentic" 50's tweed Champ list price right around two grand, must cost 'em $50 to make. Too bad they can't sell 'em all day long, that would go a long way towards solvency.

And you - of course you won't buy one - you can make a better one yourself with a lot of change left over.

What's a NOS EF86 worth? Will a contemporary one work with 20V plate voltage and be low in microphonics?
