  • VHT 12/20 RT Reverb Dwell

    Hi All,

I'm a longtime lurker who finally decided to join. After hearing somewhat mixed reviews about the VHT 12/20 RT for the last couple of years, I decided to take the plunge and bought a head unit when it was on sale. In short, I love it--the overdrive is amazing, the power stage tone controls work great, it sounds killer with the Tung Sol 6L6s I tossed in there, the watts control is very useful to get power amp overdrive at reasonable levels, the clean tone is honestly better than my 63 Vibroverb, and the tremolo is excellent. Some folks complain that the tremolo is weak, but that's probably because they're used to Opto trem--this is a bias trem that is deeper than a Princeton Reverb and perhaps a little tamer than my Vibroverb. I initially bought this as a backup for the Vibroverb, but it's now my number one girl.

One of the big selling points for me is the 6V6 reverb driver the amp uses. I was hoping/expecting to get a nice, drippy surf tone ala the Fender 6G15 when digging into the strings because of the 6V6 driver, but the amp simply doesn't make the most of the reverb circuit in its stock form, IMHO. The verb sounds OK, but it's more like a standard combo amp's reverb instead of what you'd normally expect from a 6V6/6K6 circuit, so I guess I don't understand the decision to use a 6V6 if it's not driving the tank hard. Anyway, is it feasible to drive the tank harder and add a dwell control to this circuit? I've attached the schematic of the VHT and the Fender 6G15. I get a little lost because the verb in the VHT is after the first preamp stage and the buffered fx loop. I don't use the FX loop and will happily lose it if it means I can add a dwell control.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I’ve got an idea–an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I’m talking about.

I just had in a Fender Vibro King RI.

    Same 6L6 setup.

It had the Dwell control which, personally, I found useless.

I think the Reverb sounded as you described.
    It sucked.

The guy did not want it messed with.
I would have tried a different pan.

Can you try switching the two pans (or at least identify the part numbers on each pan)

Jazz Hands, The 6G15's Dwell control is simply a reverb input volume control. You can replace the 6V6 reverb driver's R20 220k grid leak resistor with a 250k pot to create a dwell control. Adding the dwell control to the reverb circuit will not allow you to increase reverb intensity, only cut it.

The schematic shows the 6V6 getting powered by B+2. I have no familiarity with VVR but it looks that is what B+2 is. So turning down the power on the VVR control also reduces voltage to the reverb 6V6 driver tube. How does the reverb sound when VVR is at max?
