  • Torres Double Dee-Lux Amp new purchase

Hi, I'm new to the Forum I just purchased a Torres Double Dee-Lux Amp and have no idea how to use it, no manual. I have turned it on plugged in and also put an effects peddle which seemed to drive the amp a little harder, the peddle, Amp, and Fender Guitar with hand wound pickups are a set as I understand.

Apparently Dan Torres is no longer supporting his stuff so, I'm shooting in the Dark. In addition I had trouble posting pics and am not sure if their to large or something because once I picked the pic the loader would just sit there.

    Thanks,

    kv

What is the file size of the picture you are trying to attach? I think the limit is around 4 Meg.
From the limited info I've seen, the amp is just a higher power version of a Fender Deluxe (4 x 6V6 instead of 2).
I'd suggest you try to get the amp figured out without the pedal first.

It's customary on this forum that if someone requests help with any particular amp, they should also post a copy of the schematic.

Kudos to g1 for going above and beyond to look up what kind of topology the OP's amp has. Most of us don't have the time to go on wild goose chases to find schematics for oddball amps, so you're most likely to get a helpful response if you can make it easy for us to help you.

      Please post the schematic.

Just to be clear on which Deluxe, the Ampage archive I read was written by our own Steve A. He lives in the area and visited Dan's shop occasionally. He indicates that the "Double Dee-Lux" is a double Deluxe Reverb. Which is VERY different from a 5e3 Deluxe. Pretty sure it would have some Dan tweaks to the circuit though.

I doubt a schematic for this amp will ever surface.

That said... Download a Deluxe Reverb reissue or a 65 Deluxe Reverb owners manual. But you're on your own for any exclusively Dan additions to the circuit.

And, since you don't get anything if you don't ask, try asking him. I believe he still hosts the on line store:

Maybe buy something. A few sets of strings, a couple of preamp tubes, or anything. Buying tends to lube the way.

One I have is 74kb but it's not focused properly. I need to take better pics, getting old now 60 this year, without glasses my pictures suck lol

I might be able to guess at what differences there are between Dan's circuit and the Fender if I could read the control panel. Maybe just list the front panel jacks and controls in order.?.

I was beginning to do that lol. Right to left, Volume, Treble, Bass, MIDRANGE, Gain, Volume/Pull, Treble/Pull, Bass, MIDRANGE, Reverb, Master, chicken Foot Switch marked 32/20/12.

                  Thank you,

                  kv

Edit: OBTW, I was stupid and didn't notice the upload button. On my other forum I attend it will automatically load them for you.

Edit: Edit: Also I just found the second Volume pot pulls out tonight, but it wasn't marked as Pull like the Treble/Pull.

Ah. Ok. It seems he has a channel stack mod on the thing. I suspected. Is there a footswitch with the amp or a footswitch jack on the back panel?

I suspect the PULL on the volume control is for stacking/unstacking the channels without the footswitch. Volume knob pushed in is probably the clean tone for the amp. Pull to cascade the internal gain stages and generate more distortion. I suspect all three volume controls are in play with the channels stacked, but I don't know. I suspect the master is full time on both pushed and pulled tones too, but I don't know. The 32/20/12 switch is almost surely "4 power tubes"/"2 power tubes"/"2 power tubes in triode mode:" The numbers represent approximate wattage. The pull on the treble pot is either a bright switch or a mid boost. Dan did it both ways.

I think you've have it, I wish I had a Schematic though <sigh> I wouldn't know what to do with it. I know a little electronics but, nothing absolutely nothing about Valves. When I hit 32/20/12 it was a boost, I do have a foot pedal switch, it does boost as well, good to know I can dirty it up with a pull on the Volume, I'll give that a go and get back to you.

Is there anything you may know about the effects loop on the back?

                      Thank you,

Edit: I'm a hobby Electronics guy, I'm just beginning to learn a bit about Amps. Trying to repair and Onkyo reciever, I worked a while in a TV repair shop part time for 10 years repaired mostly VCR's long gone now, but I worked out of a database and repaired based on old jobs that led to trouble shooting.

If you use effects in the loop, plug them in. I don't know how it's wired, but it should be that simple. Send to the effects input and the effect output goes to the return. You may need to adjust effect output levels for unity gain. Some effects, like boost, distortion or other amplifier based devices aren't intended for loops and performance will be poor. Some older loops don't accommodate all modern effects processor type units because they have an incompatible output voltage. And some older loops don't operate at a low enough impedance for high fidelity operation that avoids detriment to the amps basic tone. ANY of this could be the case. No way to know without a schematic. But learn the amp first, then plug something like a delay, chorus pedal or, if you have one, a processor type unit into the loop and see how it goes.?. The loop is of no consequence when it's not in use.

I think exploring Dan's intended effects loop or if he had anything that can still be built. Do to many of the control circuit parts not available may prevent that exploration. But, I feel you have good balance for my decisions, the guy I purchase this thing from say's the guitar and the amp are engineered to be played together, I see a big difference playing through this amp vs playing it through anything else. I seen the bill of sale and it blew my mind how it was purchase at that price. I got it 1/3 the price but I don't think the individual who sold it to me, knew how it could be played or it's eventual potential. He really wanted me to play the guitar through the amp, I held back as he sold the guitar to my wife 4 years prior for my birthday and didn't want to sell the amp to me he was undecided I waited 4 years with 3 no's until finally he sold it to me, I didn't want him to have sellers remorse providing it is a good build.

I know sound equipment has some really big learning curves, I built a plasma speaker once, and blew out my power supply when it didn't perform as expected, but I did make it work eventually. Sadly it crashed because I didn't have the knowledge to make it work perfectly.

                          Good experience though.

                          Thank you,
