Alligator Skin 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb

I just purchased a 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb. It's covered in Alligator skin. Would this have been done custom at the factory or after market? Also has a black box with a variable resistor added between the speaker output and the speaker. Anyone know what it's for?

Early on Fender sometimes made custom items, like cramming a pair of 12's into a 2x10 box or a piggyback 4x10 tweed Bassman. I kind of doubt a 'gator skin Deluxe was made but who knows. Leo sometimes would have a special item made for his friends in the country & western music field. Sounds like a kool amp anyway.

That black box is a speaker attenuator. So you can crank up the amp to distortion levels then leak just a bit of it into the speaker. Several companies make these since the 70's up 'til now. And there are lots of custom attenuators too. Plenty of discussions about these on MEF's pages, read up to your heart's content. And welcome aboard.

Yessir, looks a treat! Reminds me of time I lived in Florida a couple months, near the Miccosukee reservation. Lots of gator skin products at reasonable prices.

And gator on the menu in many places: eat them before they eat you! Tastes like chicken. Sort of.
