  • OT: Looking for an out of date part for an 8mm film projector

Being on lockdown I started going through some old stuff and ran across some old 8mm film reels that were handed down a few years ago when a family member passed away. One of them is labeled "Daytona 1951" and I think it has footage of car racing on the beach. I've got a Bell & Howell 462A 8mm projector but the spindles are too large for the small holes on the reels. Anyone know how to locate the smaller version? I can find photos of the correct spindle but haven't been able to locate one for sale. Any advice?

That's a Super 8 projector. You can't play a regular 8mm film on it, though there is a chance somebody put super 8 film on that 8mm reel.

He answered my email already and that's what I learned. Just looked at a piece of film and it looks like the regular 8mm type. Thanks for the info!

Well since my projector is entirely the wrong type, a friend let me use their standard one. A Bell & Hammer 248. It needs a belt but even when turned manually the top tape gear isn't turning. The little metal piece that spans the gear is slipping. Possibly needs a new gear because if I gently apply a little pressure to the metal spanner it stops slipping and the film gear turns, but the teeth look nice and sharp so I'm not sure why it's slipping. Perhaps something associated needs a little treatment of oil. Had to stop troubleshooting to make dinner so I'll have to revisit it tomorrow. Anyone have experience working on these little machines?
