Jensen P12R in 40 watt Hot Rod Deville???

A local music store sold a friend of mine a Jensen P12R reissue speaker to put in his new Hot Rod DeVille, which puts out 40 watts. The P12R is rated at 25 watts so I told him to check with the store. "No problem! Unless you crank up your amp playing heavy metal it should work just fine..."

So am I overreacting here or is the store full of sh*t?

I realize that some speakers will handle twice their rated wattage but I did not think that applied to the Jensen reissues.

NOT a great speaker. I would think that if he cranks it,turns the bass up a bit,or puts a pedal in front of it that it will fry !
Tube amps EASILY put out 30% more of their rated output in short bursts.
I would want a 50w speaker..........at LEAST on that amp.
Oh well. It's just a POS Jensen RI anyway.
Send it to the landfill.

I fried 2 P12R's in parallel (50W dissapation) with a 60W amp in no time flat. Let the smoke right out of them!

Unless you are looking for a tweed tone, the P12R is not a really good choice, especially for rock. Its very flabby. On a tweed deluxe it sounds like it should, flabby.

If you are into that classis tweed tone and need the power rating, i can recommend the Jensen Neo 12. It's 100W and has a better low end response.

Any amp can put out far in excess of it's rated RMS output when distorted. The 40 watt output is what the amp will do before clipping. Speakers are usually rated for the amount of clean power they can safely handle. As the signal clips, it's RMS voltage value will continue to increase due to the duty cycle of the squared waveform. This is actual power being applied to the speaker - often nearly twice the rating of the amps clean power. I wouldn't couple a 25 watt speaker with a 40W RMS amp and expect it to last long if you do crank the volume.

Thanks for the replies! My friend really likes the way the P12R sounds in his Hot Rod Deluxe (I mispoke when I said Deville- my bad!) With every other speaker he has tried, the HRD has too much bass, even if you turn the Bass control down to 0.

Has anyone here tried the Tone Tubby Alnicos? Seemed a bit pricey but what the heck...
