  • Roland JC-120 Replacement Spkrs/Output issue?

Whats up guys, just recently bought an older, used Roland JC-120 (FINALLY!)

Model# 245 - 273N? (The back wooden panel is missing, so the only identifying numbers I could find was up/underneath what looks like a silver power unit under the backside mounted to the top. (Is this even the mod/ser#?, or would that be on the wooden back strip that identifies the rear inputs, which like I said, happens to be missing...)

Turns out I might have bought a partial lemon. I'm only getting sound out of one speaker (front right). We switched the working wires to the other speaker, and it sounded about exactly the same, so that 2nd speaker seems to work fine... But why the wires connecting to that other one aren't producing a signal is my first question. Would that imply that one output ch is shot? ugh. Any suggestions on how to test that? Or do I need to go to an amp repair shop to have it diagnosed properly?

Also, the speakers themselves sound pretty sweet (only getting 1 at a time tho as mentioned), but only at less than Main Vol at '4' or so. Anything high, and lower range (bassier) notes start to break up. Does anyone have a solid suggestion for replacement speakers that match the specs as the original, and either produce the same or warmer sound? Would changing the speakers to JBLs or Celestians or something lose the core draw of this amp, or is it primarily the electronics/amp that makes it so well sought after? Any tips on where to get suggested speakers at a decent price?

Any help is MUCH appreciated. I was so psyched, now a little bummed. Hoping with some time, work, and of course more money, I can bring it back to full life and maybe even turn a bummer into a positive... Just need some advice.

    Thanks!
    Tom

Get the amp fixed first, THEN see if the speakers need attention or not. You can always connet some other speaker to the amp to see if it is the amp or speaker breaking up. If both speaks soun d the same and break up the same, then I tend to think it is the amp.

The two speakers have individual amplifiers, so yes, one is not working. Hard to say what it might be. Something simple or acres of charcoal inside, who knows? I suspect it will not be hard to fix. If you are near Lansing, MI, bring it to me for a diagnosis.

No where near you, but man sounds like you're on the ball with this. hrm. is it worth shipping out to you? what are your bench/diagnostic fees? I do have a decent amp dr shop near me that does good work on vintage amps, maybe i'll start there and see how far i get.

but your thoughts on replacing the speakers is that i should try to first not replace them, as it might change the character/sound i have been coming to love/expect? thanks again.
