  • 1x10 or 1x12 for open back cabinets

I'm going to make some small open back guitar cabinets and was wondering what a good depth would be, whether there's an advantage to 1x10 or 1x12.

These will be big enough to hold the speakers and not much more.

    Any suggestions?

11" deep and use the 12" speaker.

      I'm going to make a few, 2x15, 2x12, 1x15, maybe a 2x10.

I just realized something...when I said "1x10 and 1x12" I was talking about the lumber for the sides, not the speakers. I didn't make that clear. 11" is close enough to a 1"x12" board, thanks.

If you plan on stacking cabinets, 11 inches is too shallow for a 2x15 and marginal for the others, best if total height is under 42 inches or so. One inch thick lumber might add too much weight without any benefits so consider using thinner material.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
