Chassis? Cheap chassis?

Hi everybody!

Well, i know i can mod, i know i can build. I have all sorts of skills, and i was born in a metalwork factory, plus i've done engineering at school before turning to woodworking and guitarmaking.

In making amps, i have two things which drag me.

One is the eyelet/turet/circuitboard thing.

The second is the chassis. I have the skils but not realy the adapted tools. I have punches thought.

I like the style of marshall, sound city or hiwatt chassis. Where do i find cheap, extremely cheap ones? Not drilled is fine. I have pilar drill, stepped drill and punches. Or DIYers, what's your take on a cheap and quickly made chassis?

Ask a local welding shop or metal shop what it would cost to make one up for you. Perhaps even a cardoard mock-up to show not only the dimenesions, but also how you want it made, like flaps at the corners tack welded as opposed to seams, or something like that. I surely know little about the process. And they might have some advice too. After all, it is just a rectangular box with an open side.

In the past, when trying to do this, I found that the local sheet metal shops would do a one off chassis for me but it always cost an absurdly high price... like anywhere from $75.00 to $125 each.
What they want is a min 50 to 100 piece project and only then did the price come down to a reasonable amount.
Even now, my chassis costs (at 100 piece pricing) is about 50% higher then it was 4 years ago!
It has become very expensive to do this.

Because of that, I'd say just buy a generic JTM45/Marshall style chassis from someone who is already selling kits, such as MOJO or WeberVST.

hi max, i make them myself, its easy if you dont want to win a beauty contest with it: (usually the thing will hide behind a wooden case anyway)
- buy a rectangular piece of sheetmetal (Aluminum 5 Euros) and a square timber(planed, 2Euros) with the edge lenght of the depht that Your Chassis is going to have
- Cut the timber to the lenght of Your Sheet metal
- Clamp the Timber to the edge of one side of the sheet metal with two or three screw clamps
- Cut the sheet metal along the timber as far as Your Edge lenght is on both sides
- now You can easily bend one long side of Your chasis to a perfect 90 ° angle.
- do this to the other side and to the short sides
- ears you have left over you can bend first and hide behind the small sides
-at last you drill holes and stabilize it with screws

- purist will not like this but ive build four chasis like this and they did not fall
apart or conduct bad or anything

It's a shame. right before I got into this whole amp thing I was running a machine shop for a company I worked for doing CAD and drawing out boxes of all shapes and sizes for the turret press, maintaining the press etc.
I could have ran off a bunch of chassis in no time at all!

I get chassis from KomboKing at http://www.komboking.worldbreak.com/index.html, when it isn't practicle to make my own. I have a nice box brake but can't weld the ends right now. He makes custom sizes and he usually has a stock Marshall style chassis on hand. His are heavy Aluminum and have welded ends very nice quality stuff, and very reasonable prices (IMHO).

As far as the Turret board thing goes there is some information in these two links that may (or may not) be helpful for you.

The metal machine in that add looks like a winner, just make sure it has different size removeable "teeth" to do chassis (boxes) with.

I wouldn't mind having a tool like that but this particular one only "Handles
sheet metal up to 22 gauge". This doesn't seem enough, especially for an
aluminum chassis. The Hammond steel chassis I just bought is 20 gauge
and they go to 18.

And i was wondering, afixing the outer part of the punch onto the sloted table, and using the inner part of the punch on the quill, which is pretty hefty, do you think i could use my drill as a punching press?

No I doubt it.
I think you'll break the threads off the arms trying to develop enough leverage to punch through anything short of super thin and soft metal like copper foil.
