  • Multi-section Cap Question

Hello, all. New to the forum but been lurking for a while.

I have a question about multi-section caps. I'm working on a project that calls for a 30/20/20 @ 450v cap. I haven't been able to find one but I have found one thats 30/20/20/20 @ 450v. Can I use it? Would I just leave the unused portion open?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Doc

    Doc,
Yes. You can leave the unused portion open or you can parallel it with one of the other sections to make a larger capacitance. (For example – make a 50/20/20 or a 40/30/20)

However, if you are doing a new build I recommend that you consider using individual caps rather than a multi-section can. The individual units will be easier to find, less expensive and will allow more grounding options.

    Regards,
    Tom

Thanks, Tom. I thought about the individual caps but wasn't sure if it was a good idea. That's probably what I'll do.
