  • retrofitted Navy SONAR unit to 5E3

A friend and I want to take an old SONAR unit and retrofit it to have a 5E3 inside, but do so altering the front as little as possible. We were wondering if there is anyway to make a headphone output just for fun since this will be a lunchbox style amp?

SO many potential smart remarks, so little time...

You would want to play a lot of Australian music through it because it was made for use "down under."

This is true. I've heard amps built in these units often sound like the lows have all been washed out.

but, uh...if anyone has an answer it would be you. any advice?

No, I don;t have useful advice.

It is a tube amp, so there needs to be a load on the output. No reason you can;t mount a power resistor with a speaker cutout wired to a phones jack somewhere on it. Works on a speaker, or load resistor with phones.

Having no idea what the thing looks like, I can;t comment on appearance issues.

Is this an amp meant to drive underwater acoustic transducers?

In general they are very high impedance capacitive loads- usually in the low k ohm range and with a capacitance that'll look like a dead short to some amplifiers. The amplifier would likely need serious modifications to function as a guitar amp.

I have no idea what it's actual use is. There's going to be no attempt to use it as is, just to use it as an awesome looking chassis, and take advantage of the fact that it is already in a form factor that can be easily converted to a 5E3. Added bonus is that it has 2 big knobs for volume, and one big frequency knob that can be the tone. Also has a big VU meter that we can wire to the output and put a bulb behind. Other than the 4 inputs there won't have to be any additional holes drilled, or non original knobs put on. It even has a power switch and fuse on the front.
