Capacitor Pans on fenders?

Does anyone know why the filter caps are placed in a separate pan on the outside of the chassis? Is this for an electrical/noise benefit, or was it simply a matter of saving valuable space in the chassis?

It was a way to use regular old CHEAP axial lead caps instead of the much more expensive can caps. There was no room underneath the chassis for either of those options without enlarging the chassis.

So, it doesn't actually have a benefit on the operation? Too bad 4 big filter caps are no longer much cheaper than a cap can.
