  • EL84 SE bias help.

    Can someone please check my numbers and tell me if this is biased too hot for a single EL84 SE?

    OT imp 5K
    B+ @ plate 295V
    B+ @ G2 268V
    RK = 220 ohms
    B+ @ RK 9V

    I get plate diss @ 11Watts.
    I am not looking to get max power out, just a safe operating point. Thanks for the help.

    You are dissapating 11.6 watts actually. But that's only part of the picture because the screens are also dissapating some power in this formula. If you have a scope it's pretty easy to set the bias so the tube is operating at center between cutoff and saturation when at max clean output. This would be class A and probably closer to 13 or 14 dissapated watts using the above formula. So a smaller cathode resistor would be needed. But if the amp sounds fine at whatever volume you are playing it then it certainly won't hurt anything to run the bias a little cold, so it's fine. You aren't too hot for sure.

      Hot enough for me

      Thanks for checking my numbers. I will leave it where it is. I can control the sound with my guitar's volume control and its loud enough for me.
