Mercury offers an upgrade tranny set for that amp. A lot of players buy these "cheap" amps and plug better parts into them. Not sure what to do with a stock tranny set apart from building a Blues Junior (had to write it out instead of the abbreviation "BJ"). But why do that when an upgrade trannie mod seems to be the thing for these amps???
Sometims a project comes along that doesn't require critically good trannies. Maybe save them for a project like that.

VJs are a 5 watt single ended EL84 class A amp with a SS power supply with DC filaments (at least the later versions). I use a stock VJ head all of the time through a 4X10 or 4x12 Marshall cab. With an OD pedal they absolutely scream. You can get a great lead tone at a low stage volume. Just don't expect much headroom. There are literally hundreds of sites out there dedicated to modding them. But seriously, you can get a new VJ head for $129 or less free shipping and no tax from MF. Why would you go to the trouble of building one. The later versions (which incorperated a lot of the mods people were doing to the earlier versions) are great amps. Epi also sells a great little 1X12 Cab for $129. Birch ply with a 70 watt rated Eminence speaker. There is also a Valve Senior which is 20 watts 6V6 PP which is a great bang for the buck.
