  • I want to do something new..... but what?

I've done a bunch of valve juniors.
    el84, 6v6, el34.
even an 18 watt baby will.
I've modified peavey royal 8, blackheart bh5, bh15, and did the steve ahola mods to a
    peavey delta blues.

did some things to a fender frontman 25r.. much better now.
and managed to fix a buys fender bassman solid state amp.

but I want to do something besides these rebuilds.. even though I make my own boards for them often.

I have some more amps coming to me.. crate, bugera.. may be doing a baby will build for a guy.

But what do I really want to build.

For one thing, I've not done a TMB.. or a VVR... I am adding a 6V6 switchable in one BH5, and in another a rectifier switchable with the solid state.

So I'd like to do a rectifier tube amp, too.
Dual EL34s seems to appeal to me.

So I think.. three 12AX7s two EL34s, plus rectifier. TMB.
don't want to do a lot of fancy to it.. not even VVR or efx loop.. just a real straightforward rock guitar amp.

I thought about a deluxe build. or something up to 40Watts..
I suppose it would wise to pay homage and do a deluxe before moving farther.

I don't even know what "baby will" means. Build what you want, really. Do you know what you want? Think of a player with raw unadulterated tone, find out what amp they're using and build one of those. Or maybe your wanting to take it to another level and start tweaking the designs you've already worked on with component value changes to maximize their potential.

It would be easy to tell you what I'm going to do next. That's pretty much all I "know". What "you" should do is a big fat ? to me. But don't be afraid to try something new or seemingly out of your comfort zone either. This forum is a great resource and you'll come out on the other side of any project with experience and probably a good amp to boot.

Build something you can use. What kinds of styles do you play? What size rooms? It sounds like you want to do a 50W Marshall, but if you don't play where you can crank it up you won't like it. Build from scratch if you really want to keep busy. Nice builds BTW. Interesting use of pickguard material for faceplates. RD

Maybe you like simple circuits?. A Supro T-bolt is simple but loudish V1 stage going into a paraphase inverter followed by a couple of cathode-biased 6L6s driving a 5k OT and a 15" speaker, and is zeptastically good.

Baby Will is the name given by the recently deceased.. (really sad! only 49) Terry Stinger for his twin el84 twin 12ax7
push pull 18 watt build. very nice amp!

I think you are right, though, I guess I sounded rambling.
I want to build something new, more than I want to tweak away at what I've done.

Thanks.. vjs have such a crummy layout.. I'm switching to off standby play toggles with a jewel, too. I hate that square switch.

I think 36W is as big as I want to go for the time being.

I did a five watt supro.. and blew it.. wound up changing the front end.
then I realized what I'd done wrong and was in too big a hurry to go back.
              d'oh!
              I should try again!

                Hey TWANG,
Got any of the Kevin O'Connor books. Try the Soma 84. PP el84 with a parallel triode front end and some slightly different tone/body controls. (It's in The Ultimate Tone Vol. 5)

You might wanna check out ax84.com!

Many fun projects over there! Some are version of well known circuits, whereas others are pretty unique (Firefly, Blues pre and ÜberSEL comes to mind!). In addition it's the home of some other well known projects, like Randy Fay's Daisycutter, Cliff Chappell's 4-4-0 and October, the Commanchero, the Plexible and the various Lead II amps.

The Trainwrecks sound really good and are well documented.

The 4-4-0 is a 2 watt verison of the Trainwreck Express. Well-tuned, and it sounds/feels awesome!

Are they well documented? I've seen some schematics floating around the WWW and I couldn't tell if they were authentic. Photos of Trainwreck internals are also rare, if existant. Can you point me to more (reliable) material about Trainwrecks?
