  • Assembling the Weber Bias Rite Tool

Hi, I wrote a tutorial on assembling the (very simple) Weber Bias Rite tool which I'd like to share with the board.

I hope it helps other newbies in getting it right the first time. This simple device has already proven itself useful on the first day of use. Using a precision multimeter you'll get better readings than with Bias King or other similar devices being sold for U$ 250 and upwards.

Several outlets have the Bias Rite Kit, DuckDuckGo is your friend in finding them.

Of course there's nothing stopping you from assembling your own, you just have to match the 100 OHM resistor to be precisely 10000 times smaller than the 1 Meg resistor. For this, you need a precision ohmmeter. So if the 100 OHM resistor turns out to be 90 ohms, you need a 900K resistor, this matching can be tricky. The 1 OHM resistor also needs to be high precision and here you need precisely 1 OHM, not more, not less. Most multimeters have an error margin of 1 OHM or more, so it's not easy matching one precisely. Your best bet would be to buy a 4 band resistor of silver band or better. Anyway, the U$ 16 being charged for the pre-matched resistor set, octal base and socket and plugs is a fair price. If you're a pro, the Bias Rite will pay for itself many times over with the first BIAS job alone.
