  • Converting a Fender Hot rod Deville Preamp section into Blackface Preamp

Hello, I recently tought about some adjustments to my Fender Hot Rod Deville.
Because I don't really use the Drive channel and the Hot rod has to much gain in the Preamp section , I wondered if it would be possible to convert it to a Blackface type preamp. I tought it would be a better solution than just putting in lower gain tubes.

The Idea is to bypass one of the gain stages by cutting some traces on the PCB, adding a jumper and putting the volume pot at a different part of the circuit.

    Heres a quick drawing.

and theres the original schematic. Schematic Hot Rod Deville

few other changes: C1 -> 22uF , Capacitor parallel to R17 (22uF) and R17 to 820R and a little tweaking to the Tone section.

The component values are almost exactly like on a Fender BF (deluxe reverb)

I never made such a drastic change in an amp before so I'm not exactly sure if it's a good idea. I'm really confused about the way this new preamp sounds in combination with the Hot Rod Phase Inverter Stage which looks quite a bit different than the one on a BF Fender type amp.

Do you guys think that this would be worth it or should i just stick with adding a low gain tube in V2? Would you recommend any other changes or maybe altering some values in the PI stage?

    Thanks in advance , Chris

you'd have to cut so many traces and jumper so many things that it might be a better idea just to sell your amp and grab a deluxe reissue.

would be true, but i allready modded that thing, so there are all orange drops, quality tubes, new speakers etc in it.
eventually I want to convert it to a 5E5 or something, but i tought, in the mean time ,this would give me a good sound for just some minor changes (compared to building a new one )
so would it be possible ?
