  • Deluxe Reverb - reverb mix level adjustment question

The reverb on my amp is not loud enough for surf, even at 10.
I found out that adding a 680pf cap in parallel with the 470k resistor ("mix" resistor?) makes the reverb sound perfect to my ears, but it also rolls off some high frecuencies.

What can it be done to increase the reverb level without affecting tone?

    Thanks!

    Felipe.

The reverb tank is shot, or it has a broken wire inside. The tank will stop working when it gets old.
Then replace it and commence surf music, once again.

Thanks soundguru, the tank is new, tubes are new, etc... but your suspicion is correct.

There is a problem with the reverb circuit (http://music-electronics-forum.com/t26119/)
I never played a Deluxe Reverb before a built mine, so I cant tell if the reverb level is right.

      I'd better check that first.

Anyway, that doesn't answer my question! What if I want even more reverb???

      cheers,

      Felipe

Consider bulding an outboard reverb unit.

You don't need more reverb, the amp has enough reverb to drown a horse. There is something wrong. Instead of focusing on modifying the verb, focus on getting it working right.
If it worked right, you would not need to modify it.
See if your reverb tank is plugged in backwards, see that you have a 12AT7 reverb drive tube, make sure that you have the right model tank. There are over 10 different tanks, and you may have the wrong one.The wrong tank will prevent it from working correctly.

Post your schematic, and have your voltmeter ready to check the voltages. Look on you reverb tank and tell us the numbers stamped on the can.
There are lots of deluxe reverbs, and I need to know which one you are building. OK I need to know, then I can tell you how to get more reverb.

I solved that horrid noise thing!
I resoldered the jumpers on V3 (grid to grid, etc) and replaced the piece of cable i was using to connect the plates together with a longer one.
I assume, after reading similar experiences, that the issue was lead dress related.

But... the REVERB LEVEL IS STILL THE SAME!

You promised a lot of reverb, soundguruman, and I need a tsunami of reverb!
It's not like there is no reverb, i mean, it took a while for me to accept the idea of the reverb being weak.
            Ill upload some recording tomorrow.

            The data:
            I've built a Deluxe Reverb AB763 circuit.
Tank is belton equivalent for 4AB3C1B.
Transformer is Heyboer, HY022921, fender reverb replacement.
Tube is OK, tried different brands and types before.

            B+ = 415
            Voltage on V3 plates: 397
Cathodes: 6.5 - this one should be 8.5 (according to fender schematic). ¿ Do you think it makes a difference? ¿Should I try a smaller value for the cathode resistor on V3?

MAybe I should throw some sand on the floor...
            Soundguruman, I'm counting on you!

I've built a Hoffman AB763 DR and though the reverb is deep and lush it is still very very different to the 6G15 Standalone that folks like Dick Dale use. The 6G15 produces the ultimate surf sound that I suspect you're looking for.

              Cheers.

I'd agree you should be knee deep in reverb with a Deluxe AB763. I've tried to reduce the reverb in my AB763 DR by changing the values of the balance? config which is the 10pf/3.3Meg. Your stating you put a 680pf across the 470K resistor which would be part of the voltage divider with the 220K on the output side of the reverb pot? I don't think that's where you should be looking. As others have said maybe you need to get the original circuit working first. Can you post a clear high res picture? I'd agree the outboard reverb unit would be a major upgrade in reverb tone but maybe you haven't got to try the working version yet. Mine sounds like your in a 500ft tunnel when it's on 10.
