  • Help wiring OT on 5E1

    Greetings,
First let me start off by saying im new to the amp building game and bought a 5e1 kit online. Everything seems to be going fine, but i have been hung up on wiring my output transformer! I have an upgraded hammond 125ese ot with a yellow, green, orange, black and white secondary wires shown on the picture below. My question is what wire do i use for an 8 ohm jensen speaker. Im trying to match with 8 ohm wire but the diagram has me confused. also using a 6v6( actually 5881?) power tube.

    Thank you in advance

I'd vote for yellow, 5,000 ohm load resistance at 8 ohm speaker. (And Black-Common on the other end, of course)

You can choose a tube with a plate load resistance in between 2500 ohms and 10000 ohms. That's what the left (primary) side of the diagram tells us.
The right side (secondary) of the diagram tells us which wire for 4, 8 or 16 ohms at a given plate load resistance.

The yellow wire is at 8 ohms when the primary is at 5000 ohms.
A 5881 has a plate load resistance of 4200 ohms at 350 volts (see tube data sheet) which is close enough to 5000.
For your 8 ohm speaker and a 5881 use the yellow wire.

The green wire is at 8 ohms when the primary is at 10000 ohms.
A 6V6 has a plate load resistance of 8500 ohms at 315 volts which is close enough to 10000.
For your 8 ohm speaker and a 6V6 use the green wire.

I hope this is not too confusing.
