I have questions for anyone who built the Proluxe using the Weber layout and a Weber W02513 PT, but went with cathode bias, and is using tube rectification. My questions involve tube choice, tube disapation, and idle current. When I first built it, I was using 6L6GC's; but it seemed the PT (Weber W02513) was running kind of hot. Then I looked at the layout and noticed it specified 6L6GT's. I did some research and found they are like the old 6L6 and 6L6GB in terms of power rating and current draw. And there's a big difference in current draw between the GC's and the GT's. So I figured I get some of the GT's, but in the mean time I stuck in some new Sino 5881's that I had on hand. They also draw less current. But now I need to get the plate voltage down, so I stuck a 20V zener between the PTCT and ground and stuck in a 5U4GB rectifier (Layout calls for a GZ34). OK, so my plate voltage is now around 388v and disapation is around 17-18 watts per tube, which is a little higher than 70% of the 5881 max. of 23 watts. In addition, when I hook up my bias tester, it shows idle current of around 47mA, which looks pretty high. The cathode resister is 300 ohm, which is what the layout calls for. My only deviation from the layout is in the filtering: I used 30-16-16uf.
I'd like to know how some of you Proluxe builders are running these things: What tubes, plate voltages, idle current, cathode resistor, etc. I feel like I'm missing something here. A prime example of how a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous...;-)
